Customer service representative jobs are employed by many different establishments to serve as a point of contact for the firm's customers. These workers are responsible for ensuring that the customers receive an adequate level of customer service through resolving any inquires questions, or problems about the firm's products or services. Customer service rep jobs interact with customers through telephone, email, fax, and in person. These questions and requests may be routine or may be more involved like resolving complaints.

The minimum educational requirement for customer service representative jobs is at least a high school diploma. Some employers are requiring their workers to have higher education with either an associate or bachelor's degree. Typically, on the job training is used by employers to provide the workers with the proper foundation of skills to be successful on the job. The training usually involves customer service and phone skills, proper use of the telephone and computer systems, and company policies and regulations. The length of the training period and its requirements vary by the employers.

According to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics, there were 2.2 million customer service representatives employed in 2006 which were mainly based within the finance and insurance industry. It is projected that customer service representative employment will increase 25 percent from 2006 to 2016 which is much faster than the national average for all occupations. Job prospects should remain excellent for individuals with previous customer service experience, strong interpersonal communication skills, and high computer proficiency.
